The spring season has officially started in high schools and colleges in North America and players are getting ready to reach their best performances on the fields and the courts.
The process is no different at Langley High School. The Saxons baseball team is getting prepared for the 2022 spring season. They will play their first scrimmage match on March 4 against Justice High School at the opponent’s home ground. Their last game in the team’s regular season is scheduled for May 9 at Langley High School against Wakefield High School.
The Saxons’ baseball players share the spotlight of the spring season with five other sports: lacrosse (boys and girls), soccer (boys and girls), softball, tennis (boys and girls) and track and field (boys and girls).
The school is one of the members of the Virginia High School League which includes some high schools in the state of Virginia. According to the VHSL website, the league maintains eligibility and standards for play in 27 sports and in 12 academic activities and sponsors 162 team championships in sports and 27 team championships in activities. In addition to that, nearly 174,000 students participate in VHSL athletic activities.
The 2022 season officially starts for the Saxons on March 18 against Wakefield High School at their opponent’s house.
The Saxons, led by varsity coach Jared Sronce and JV coach Jeff Hahne, have already started their preparation even before the end of 2021.
The players started their lifting sessions on Nov. 29, four days a week after the school period. Right after winter break, the Saxons are scheduled to restart practice after school.
Starting on Feb. 21 and ending on Feb. 25, the Saxons will hold tryouts for their baseball team in order to fill in the squad for the 2022 season. The players must arrive to the tryouts on time and maintain social distancing. The varsity team tryouts will be held from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m., while the tryouts for the junior varsity team from 5:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
In addition to arriving on time and maintaining social distancing, Langley students who want to become part of the team must bring the following to the tryout: a paperwork form completed, a mask (not gator), a 32+ ounce bottle of water and baseball attire equipment completely disinfected.
At the tryouts, both Sronce and Hahne will be evaluating technical and physical aspects of the contestants for the team squad such as arm strength and accuracy, hitting for power and contact and pitching.
Students interested in joining the team can find both coaches’ contact information on the Saxons’ website.
